Who we are

Dr. William Hocter is a physician practicing psychiatry with board certifications in general, forensic, and geriatric psychiatry. He retired from the US Navy in 2016 and currently lives in the Fredericksburg area. He graduated from Loyola University of Chicago in 1986. and completed psychiatry internship and residency training at Naval Hospital (currently Naval Medical Center), Portsmouth, Virginia. He graduated from a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Case Western University in 1991. He completed a 30-year naval career, including duty stations in San Diego, Guam, Naval Hospital Great Lakes, Quantico, and Fort Belvoir. He deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Naval Station Guantánamo Bay. He and his wife have been married for 43 years and have 10 children, now fully grown.

Dr. Hocter is a practicing Roman Catholic taking a special interest in caring for religious patients who might otherwise be uncomfortable seeking psychiatric care. He also has substantial experience in the treatment of clergy.

He has expertise in the treatment of following conditions:

  • Mood disorders, including major depression and bipolar conditions.

  • Anxiety Disorders

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders.

  • Schizophrenia

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

Patients 16 years of age and older suffering from these conditions are likely to benefit from care with Dr. Hocter. He has additional expertise in the treatment of geriatric patients. He has less experience in treating substance use disorders as the primary focus of treatment, gender dysphoria, and eating disorders.

Dr. Hocter provides the following services:

  • Outpatient psychiatric evaluation

  • Medication management of psychiatric conditions

  • Supportive psychotherapy which largely uses a cognitive behavioral model that is psychodynamically informed. Interpersonal therapy of depression is also available.

  • Psychiatric consultation for attorneys.

Outpatient services are offered on Monday through Thursday evenings. Friday hours vary.
